Canvas Studies

I had been posting on Instagram about a series of canvases I had been working on. They were in part an idea for a friend’s wedding and an exercise in loosening up at a large scale. I got a lot of great feedback on them so I wanted to share them as a whole. They are each 36 x 48″ framed in black, flush mount, solid hardwood frame.

The last of the series, Minot Tide, will be on view at the South Shore Art Center’s 60th Arts Festival June 19th-21st.

The first and third of the series, “Nantucket Sound, #3” and “Cisco” respectively, have already been SOLD.

Not what I normally do, but it was great to shake things up and work in canvas for a bit!

Cheers!

New Painting: Illumination (at the South Shore Arts Festival)

While I’m working on a number of larger paintings, I have a recent new small scale piece that was accepted in the 60th South Shore Arts Festival Juried Show coming up June 19th, 20th & 21st. It is 5″ x 13″ and is acrylic paint on three separate panels of acrylic.

The reference for the work was an evening at Cisco beach in Nantucket. This piece is all about light and the translucency of water and I loved how the waves were back lit that day. I’m looking forward to doing more (and larger!) pieces in this vein.

The Art Festival is on Cohasset Common among many other artists and artisans. It’s Father’s Day weekend too so bring your dad! I’m working on a number of new pieces so will update soon!

Cheers!

The show entitled, “Reflections”, will open April 10th and run till June 20th at the Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy, Florida. This is my first exhibit with the ASMA and I’m so happy to be a part of it.

The piece that will be part of the exhibition is a 21″ x 30″ multiple layered acrylic titled “The Wave Falters”, it’s shipped out an on its way now!

I only wish I could work out a way to get to the opening. Could use a little Florida sun right about now! If you are in the area, the opening will be April 10th from 6-9 pm. Along with this exhibition there will be some other simultaneous events at the center that evening.

New Painting: And Again

A new painting in my Spindrift series, “And Again”. This new painting is 32″ x 40″ and is painted in acrylic on three layers of acrylic panel. The framing is also routered acrylic.

This is the third large piece in the series which joins “Caught Inside” and “Breakwall” and I love the emotion that water and storms can convey. I have more on the way!

Myth & Memory at the South Shore Art Center

Along with the juried show, “Journeys”, that includes two of my pieces, I am currently in a small group show, “Myth & Memory” at the South Shore Art Center in the Dillon Gallery. The show runs from now until February 15th so please stop by if you are in the neighborhood!

Joining me in the show are fellow gallery artists Danguole Rita Kuolas, Michele Meister, Marie Peters, and Judy Rossman.

Journeys | Myth & Memory | ART Off the Wall

I’ll have 8 pieces in this show,  all of which have never been shown at the Art Center before. All of my work shown are multilayered acrylic paintings of sea scapes. The show is a quick survey of what I’ve been working on in this medium over the last year spanning multiple different series.

The South Shore Art Center is located at:

119 Ripley Road, Cohasset, MA

They’re open 10-4 Mon to Sat, and 12-4 on Sundays.

Thank you to everyone for all the support this past year, it’s been very busy and so exciting and I can’t wait to see what 2015 holds!

New Painting: Caught Inside

My most recent painting from my new series, Spindrift, is a 29×44″ multilayered paneled acrylic piece entitled, “Caught Inside”.

As I’ve increased my scale and narrowed my composition, I am really interested in how the layering and scale starts transform the image. I’ve loved the movement and emotion that these big waves have been taking on and making them have been really therapeutic in a way.

This piece, is showing at the South Shore Art Center from January 9th- February 15th, seeing it in person is a whole different experience.

Thanks!

New Painting: Breakwall

It’s been a VERY busy few weeks in the studio so I’m catching up on posting some new pieces that I have on view at the South Shore Art Center from Jan 9th-Feb 15th. This painting is titled, “Breakwall” and is the first of a series of much larger sea series I’m working on called Spindrift. While the piece is still in my layered acylic panels, the size is 32″ x 40″, almost twice the size that I’d been working in up till now. As my scale is getting larger, my view is getting narrower – it’s a whole new aesthetic for me.

I’m really excited that the new scale affords me a different experience in creating and viewing the work. While I paint in a very realism based style, with larger works comes the ability to play more with stroke and technique on the acrylic. The layering has a different effect in these subjects too, they’re more textural.

Thanks!

Art Show Openings! “Journeys” at the South Shore Art Center

Opening at SSAC tomorrow night!

well scituated

I’m very pleased to announce that I have two paintings that have been selected for the upcoming show at the South Shore Art Center, Journeys.

Journeys

The show was juried by Zola Solemente from the Arden Gallery in Boston. The two pieces chosen are “Sunder and Spray” and “Breakwall”, both of which I’ve completed in the last month.

“Sunder and Spray” at Trinity Collection

UPDATE: This piece has been sold.

This painting which I just completed is the largest I’ve completed yet. At 18″h x 44″w it has a great presence and I’m loving the detail and impact I can get at a larger scale. Entitled, ‘Sunder and Spray’, it’s a wild wave breaking in different directions as it slams into the shore.

"Sunder and Spray", 18"h x 44"w, acrylic paint on multiple acrylic panels, © Jess Hurley Scott, art, painting, wave painting, artist, contemporary landscape, seascape, ocean
“Sunder and Spray” (detail), © Jess Hurley Scott

It’s messy, angry, which was only amplified when I broke the image up into different layers of paint and acrylic. There’s no horizon, no actual shore, just the layered rolling water.

As with all of my paintings, the piece is layers of acrylic spaced and suspended in acrylic framing. The space between the layers allows the light of the external environment play into the work while having it totally encased.

“Sunder and Spray” is also joining me on the ferry to Nantucket for my artist showcase this weekend at Trinity Collection with jewelry artist Kerrin Falk Forsyth of Falk Jewelry Designs. It’s quite an organic and fun collaboration. I love that custom surf boards, exclusive watch designs, precious corals and stones and these waves will be all in one space.

The show runs from Friday, December 5th through Sunday, December 7th at The Trinity Collection. They are at 50 Main Street, and we’ll be exhibiting from 10 am to 5 pm. Kerrin and I will be serving a little holiday cheer if you’re on the island and want to stop in to visit!

‘The Wave Falters’, at Nantucket Christmas Stroll

Thrilled to finally assemble this new painting this weekend titled, “The Wave Falters”. It is a larger piece, at 21″h x 30″w, but  I was fascinated with the texture and translucency of this shot so having a larger scale to work with was key.

The piece is comprised of 3 layers of clear acrylic paneling that is entirely hand painted and framed in custom routered acrylic framing. I love how the light moves through this painting and the foam takes on so much emotion and character.

I’ll be bringing this along to the Nantucket Christmas Stroll this weekend, December 5-7th at The Trinity Collection. I’ll be spending the weekend doing a weekend artist showcase with the fabulous Kerrin Falk Forsyth of Falk Jewelry Designs. This will be among a dozen or so pieces that I’ll have on hand for the show.

The Trinity Collection is at 50 Main Street, open from 10 am – 5 pm, if you’re on the island I hope you’ll stop in to see us!

Cheers!

New Painting: Rip Tide

As another Nor’Easter has blown through the South Shore, I thought it appropriate to share my lastest piece!  I was previewing this in Hingham during the Hingham Arts Walk before I finished it so I could show how the piece is created. I have since finished this frothy moment and am happy to share it with you!

Chel Bella in Hingham, we’ll be set up outside the shop!

Since I don’t normally participate in a regular open studio, this will be a chance to do a special exhibit of some of my work among other South Shore artists and in a fun and relaxed setting. I’ll be bringing along a range of different sizes and pieces to check out.

The long range forecast looks like gorgeous weather for Sunday! Looking forward to a fun day and meeting a lot of great people!

Hope to see you there!

Layers Upon Layers: Art Onions?

I’ve been playing with some new images for an upcoming fundraiser at the James Library in Norwell.

14

It’s somewhat of an experiment for me, as the premise of the show is to use Instagram images printed and mounted on panels for an upcoming fund raiser in November. I like the idea of it so I’m taking the opportunity to play with some of my layered acrylic paintings and try a new medium with them. I’m playing with some shots now, we’ll see how they come out and I’ll post them before the show. Guess I have to purchase some Mod Podge!

So far untitled but in works piece for the instagram show

These images are just the filtered files so far. In the end, I will have used digital imagery to created layered paintings that are then re-shot digitally, printed out and decoupaged to panels. The evolution of the imagery and it transferring from one medium to another appeals to me and we’ll see how it comes out!

The Instagram Show and Party  is November 7th, 2014 from 7-9pm.

24 West St. Box 164,
Norwell, Massachusetts

tickets for the party can be purchased here

Seems like a fun night and a great cause, hope you can join us. Cheers!

New Painting: Along the Front

Here’s a first look at a big piece I’m just finishing, Along the Front. This painting, like the more recent, Turmoil, is from a storm off the coast of Scituate.

This is one of the largest pieces I’ve done in the layered acrylic. I love playing with the mist and blending the lines from one layer to the next.  I hope to show this one later this fall, I’ll keep you posted as to when and where!
